About Western Sydney International Airport

Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport — officially abbreviated as WSI (IATA: WSI, ICAO: YSWS) — is Australia's most significant new aviation infrastructure project in decades. Located at Badgerys Creek in Luddenham, 44 km west of the Sydney CBD, it will operate as a fully curfew-free, 24-hour airport from October 2026.

The airport is named in honour of Nancy Bird Walton, the youngest Australian woman to gain a pilot's licence and one of Australia's greatest aviation pioneers. Construction of Stage 1 began in September 2018 and was substantially completed in June 2025, with a 3.7 km runway and a single integrated international and domestic terminal spanning approximately 90,000 m².

Unlike Sydney Airport (Kingsford Smith), which is constrained by a legislated night curfew and a cap of 80 flight movements per hour, WSI will have no such restrictions — making it a genuine 24/7 gateway for both passengers and freight. It will also be the first major airport in Australia to operate without an on-site air traffic control tower, using a pioneering digital remote ATC system.

Getting to Western Sydney Airport from the Illawarra

The opening of the M12 Motorway in March 2026 has made the drive from the Illawarra to Western Sydney Airport significantly more straightforward. The recommended route is via the M1 Princes Motorway north, joining the M7 Westlink Motorway at Prestons, then taking the new M12 Motorway west directly to the airport terminal. No toll-free alternatives exist for this journey — the M7 and M12 are both tolled.

1

M1 Princes Motorway

Head north from your Illawarra suburb on the M1 toward Sydney. This is the main arterial connecting the Illawarra coast to Greater Sydney.

2

M7 Westlink Motorway

At Prestons interchange, join the M7 heading north-west. The M7 bypasses inner Sydney and connects directly to the M12.

3

M12 Motorway (New — March 2026)

Take the M12 west from the M7. This new motorway runs directly to the airport terminal, cutting travel time significantly compared to older routes.
